All About The Exciting World Of Dog Agility

November 3rd, 2010 by Jenny

When talking animal sports, more and more people are getting into dog agility as an alternative to the usual horse racing and equestrian tournaments. Dog agility would involve the handler urging his or her dog to navigate through the course in the least amount of time.

Dogs entering agility contests cannot be confined to a leash, as per general rules. Dogs would have to jump hurdles, pass through pipes, and move through miscellaneous obstacles as the clock would keep moving.

Dog agility may have a different system of scoring and different rules than equestrian, but it had actually started out as being heavily inspired by the latter sport. In America, there are many dog agility organizations that you can join if you wish to give this sport a try.

There are many dog agility clubs in America’s rural and suburban areas that act as feeders for the larger organizations. These organizations are all compliant to international dog agility standards and rules.

Moving through the different obstacles and jumps is just as important as speed when it comes to judging a dog agility competition. Scoring priority can also be given to the handler, as opposed to the dog in some countries where dog agility is popular.

Ideally, the organization handling the trial will ensure that the agility obstacle course is designed with the safety of the dog in mind. This would include using displaceable jump bars that won’t pose a danger to the dog should it miss a hurdle. And before a dog agility competition begins, safety coordinators ensure that the bars and other surfaces are roughened up to protect the dogs from slipping and sliding, preventing them from serious injury.

During an agility competition, the animals and handlers will participate in various obstacle courses that offer different levels of challenge based on the pet’s level of ability. When the trial begins, the handler has to maneuver the dog through the course without use of a leash or reward, beating the complicated course in the least amount of time.

And it is possible for you and your dog to move up to a higher level as you gain success at your present level - be prepared for more difficult courses and a higher level of agility required to succeed.

When a dog does something wrong during a competition, it’s known as a “fault,” and they are penalized if they go over the standard time calculations. Dogs competing against each other in the same division need to be of similar size. And once the divisions have been finalized, the dogs would compete against each other, with the winner being the dog (and its handler) who completes the course with the shortest time and the least number of faults.
